- Initial Environment: A green forest with high biodiversity.
- A forest fire starts, caused by lightning.
- all of the plants and trees are burned, leaving the forest with low biodiversity. However, the soil has remained intact.
- because the soil was still intact, annual plants and grasses started to grow after 1-2 years. This is the beginning of secondary succession. If there was no soil it would be primary succession.
- throughout the course of 5-150 years after the fire, the forest now has grasses, shrubs, pines, young oak, and hickory.
- now the forest has completely rebuilt itself. Because there was still soil after the fire it only took 150 years. If there was no soil and it was primary succession this would have taken hundreds of years.
