- The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in.
- Winston opens the diary and is about to write his thoughts in it, which is an illegal thing to do.

- Winston is thinking about the capabilities of controlling the future. He can't focus due to the military music playing from the telescreen.

- Winston recalls the Two Minutes of Hate.

- Winston questions if there are other people who are against the party.
- THE BOOK
- During Two Minutes of Hate Winston caught a glance with O'Brien and thinks that both of them are against the Party.
- Winston knew—yes, he KNEW!—that O’Brien was thinking the same thing as himself. An unmistakable message had passed.
- Winston writes in his diary "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER". He convinces himself that he has committed a crime even before writing those words. However, Winston is very scared when he hears a door knock.
