- Little Man, Christopher John. Cassie, and Stacey are heading to school.
- We get introduced to T.J and Claude. Also, T.J starts telling the Logan Children all about the burnings of the Berry family.
- While the Logan children and T.J and Clause were walking to school, they had a scary altercation with the bus.
- Jefferson Davis Bus
- Jeremy Simms is introduced as a kind white kid that always walks with the Logan children.
- Here is the Jefferson Davis County School where Jeremy and his mean older sister Lillian Jean with other whites attend to.
- We are introduced to Mrs. Crocker, and she is Cassie and Little Man's teacher. She gives out "new books" out to them.
- There was an offensive term on the books causing Little Man to react and Cassie to intervene. In the end both of them got the switch by their teacher Mrs. Crocker
- Mrs. Crocker confronts Mama about what happened with Cassie and Little Man expecting the same reaction but instead Mama was relaxed and instead covering up the offensive terms on her classes books.
