  • Townshend Act
  • Parliament passed this act in June 1767, after Britain withdrew the Stamp Act. This new act added taxes to imported items from Britain like tea, glass, and paper. These were things that the creator of this act, Charles Townshend, thought the colonists couldn’t make for themselves. The colonists thought that since he was not an elected member of Parliament, much like many other members, they shouldn’t have to listen to their rules. This started the formation of the Daughters of Liberty and the Sons of Liberty. Soon after, many colonists started boycotting these goods to become more economically independent. Parliament ended up repealing the Townshend Act taxes in 1770 excluding tea, which would eventually lead to the Boston Tea Party
