- Dad what is water harvesting?
- Why do you ask, Ben?
- Well uhm.. yesterday I asked Uncle Joe why he was collecting water during rainfall.
- So can you please tell me about water harvesting?
- And he said he was water harvesting..but I don't know what it is.
- Sure!
- Oh wow okay so we use it for farming?
- The capture and storage of water, especially rainwater or grey water, for later agricultural, industrial, or domestic use is called water harvesting.
- Yes we do it is a really important and helping process because it cause helps us farmers in irrigation
- Does it have any disadvantages? If it does what are they?
- Are there different methods for water harvesting or only one?
- Yes it does, like it requires regular maintenance, it also requires high amounts of storage and also needs rainfall which is unpredictable. It also requires high cost or the setup
- Yes there are many ways like digging small pits, lakes and putting in watershed system.There are many more ways to do water harvesting like by constructing dykes, rooftop harvesting, khadin system and by building small earthen dams.
- Then can you tell me its advantages?
- Sure! It helps in recharging groundwater, it also reduces floods and soil erosion , It is also useful during drought and it is easy to maintain the system. Rainwater can also be used for drinking purposes and for household and personal use.
- It is also very useful as it can meet the water requirements for the future and at the time of disasters.
