Ralph found himself on the island by himself. He ran into Piggy. Then they discovered a shell, which they named conch. Ralph blew into the conch in order to summon the other youngsters. When Ralph blew into the conch, a swarm of lads appeared. They had to pick a leader, and Ralph was the winner. Ralph, Jack, and Simon then went exploring on the island.

Another argument began between Jack and Ralph because Jack and his hunters had went pig hunting, and they left the fire. Jack was supposed to watch the fire. The fire did not burn, and as the result the ship missed seeing all of the kids stuck on the island. Ralph was angry and yelled at Jack, but Jack did not care.

Ralph called a large gathering of the lads. They solved many issues. Ralph was talking about kittens, courage, and animals. The littluns were terrified of several creatures throughout the night. Because everyone had a different view on monsters, the meeting eventually turned into a big discussion.

Sam and Eric, also known as Samneric, are watching the signal fire at night when a dead parachutist from the air battle above the island crashes on some branches on the mountain next to Sam and Eric. The "beast" seemed to be moving in the breeze. In front of their fear, they proceeded to tell Ralph, and the next day they continued their exploration.
