  • French Change
  • We are equal!
  • The common people, or Thrid Estate, wanted to have equal rights and representation compared to the nobility. They were unfairly taxed and their economy was failing.
  • Haitian Motive
  • They orchestrated a Coup d'etat or takeover. They took over the Bastille which was a prison with supplies of food and weapons.
  • Haitian Method
  • Get him!
  • Reforms were made. They abolished all noble privileges, tax exemptions, and completely got rid of Feudalism. The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen was created in August 1789. It gave freedom of speech, private property, liberty, equality, and many other rights to the common citizen.
  • Haitian Change
  • The Haitians who were enslaved wanted equal rights and to be free of slavery. They were tired of the bad working conditions and the harsh punishments.
  • They held a military rebellion and fought France, Spain, and Britain. All of them wanted control over the island. Toussaint L'Ouverture was the general of the enslaved army and one of their biggest political leaders. It took them a couple of years of fighting and negotiating but in the end, they won their freedom and Independence.
  • After the war, they became independent from France and ended all slavery permanently in Haiti. Sadly they have not been able to revive their economy even today. Most Haitians live in poverty and violence.
