- Armentina Ross (Harriet Tubman) was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820. At the age of 6 she was considered old enough to work. Although she didnt start straight in the fields she started of by weaving.
- Take this and find these people. Go to the first house ...................
- At the age of eleven she was not counted as a child so she wore a bright bandana. and she was no longer known by her "basket name". So she would now be called Harriet.
- She got married to John Tubman who was a free African American and she wanted to escape north but John did not want to come. So in 1849 she escaped.
- Well done!
- Harriet was then given a piece of paper with 2 names on it from their white neighbor. The neighbor then told her how to get to the first house on her path to freedom.
- At the first house she was put into a wagon covered with a sack and driven to her next destination. She then hitched a ride with a woman and her husband who were passing by.
- She learned about the underground railway and later in that year she became the conductor.
