  • Hi, I'm Martin Luther, I live here in Germany as a Priest at the Wittenberg Castle church.
  • This is not what the church said?
  • Oh no the prices have gone up!I don't think I will be able to pay!
  • Well I guess if I don't eat for a few weeks I could buy indulgence.
  • Yes! I have enough money for a meal too!
  • Martin Luther was born on the 10th of November 1483, in Eisleben Saxony, Germany. Luther's parents were Hans and Margret Luther, they were peasants, but his father worked very hard to increase his family's status as a miner and owner of many small mines. After finishing school, Martin Luther chose to follow in what his father Hans has started and increase his family's status by becoming a lawyer. after receiving a Batchelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts, Luther became a monk, theologian, and priest at the Wittenberg Castle church in the 16th century.
  • These 95 Theses will change the church forever!
  • During this time in the 16th century, the Reformation of Martin Luther began. The Catholic church and the Roman church split, leading to the catholic church creating a new type of Christianity called Protestantism. Soon Martin Luther began to question the many practices of the Catholic church as he studied the Bible. Martin Luther found many areas where he felt the Bible and the Catholic Church disagreed.
  • The Church has been lying to us! and stealing our money!
  •
  • One of these was the church selling indulgences, a way for people to be forgiven of their sins and when they die, do to heaven. This happened by paying the church money, the church had been using this money to fund expensive projects and a large portion of the earing on their land. Martin Luther believed you could only enter heaven through having faith in God and doing good deeds. This encouraged him to put an end to indulgences.
  • But where will we get our money from?
  • I guess we'll have to get rid of indulgences
  • On October 31st, 1517, Luther made a list of 95 points where he thought the church had gone wrong in its teachings. he nailed these pints to the door of a Catholic church in Germany, this was the start of the Protestant Reformation. These 95 points were called the '95 theses', the main point Luther made was that you could only enter heaven through having faith in God, not through indulgences.
  • Soon after the 95 theses were hammered onto the Catholic church for the community to see, people started to realise the church had been lying. This made people stop buying indulgences and turn against the church.
  • The Catholic church responded to this corruption by making partial improvements. The church stopped selling indulgences and taught more about Jesus and God. this happened because the Council of Trent formed a doctrine to outline what needed to be changed to get rid of indulgences and please society.
