- Encouraged by revolutionary protesters, they raided the city armory for weapons and marched on the Palace of Versailles. The crowd shut off the palace and, in a dramatic and violent confrontation, they successfully pressed their demands upon King Louis XVI. The Women's March on Versailles was an important event at the start of the French Revolution. It gave the revolutionaries confidence in the power of the people over the king.

- Napoleon was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution. He was forced to abdicate his throne after allied Austrian, Prussian and Russian forces vanquished his army and occupied Paris. Banished into exile on Elba, he returned less than a year later to challenge the weak Bourbon king who had replaced him. undermined the goals of the Revolution by violating the Declaration of the Rights of Man, insisting on returning to principles of the Old Regime.

- The Tennis Court Oath was a pledge that was signed in the early days of the French Revolution and was an important revolutionary act that displayed the belief that political authority came from the nation’s people and not from the monarchy. the tennis court oath preceded the abolition of feudalism and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen as the National Assembly became increasingly radical.

- The flight to Varennes describes the royal family’s failed attempt to escape their house arrest in Paris in June 1791. They were located and detained the following day and returned to the capital. The flight to Varennes was a turning point in the French Revolution because it exposed the untrustworthiness of the king and the unworkability of the newly implemented constitution.
