- The main characters were Stanley Yelnats and zero. Most of the story was at camp green lake that was very dry. It was a camp for bad boys who life was messed up. They had to dig holes everyday to turn them good again. Camp Green Lake was very dry and hot with no rain.

- Stanley was blamed for stealing shoes out of a homeless shelter. He got sentenced 16 months at Camp Green Lake.
- falling action
- Stanley received a letter from his mother. He thought Zero tried to read his letter. Zero told Stanley he couldn't read so he didn't know what the letter said. They made a deal that if Zero would dig half of Stanley hole everyday that he would teach him to read and write. The two boys became good friends because of this.
- resoulution
- After Zero ran away Stanley stole the water truck , and ran off to find zero. Stanley found Zero and climbed p a mountain called gods thumb. Stanley had to carry Zero up the mountain and for days they were living off onions and they still managed to stay alive.
- Stanley decided to dig one more hole so they left the mountain and went back to camp green lake. They found a chest in the finale hole they dug but the warden said it was her treasure but it just had Stanley name on it.
- Stanley and Zero became very good friends cause of what they've been through together ans then even became next door neighbors
