- Della and Jim had just got married and they lived in a flat in Dallas Texas. The were very poor and only made $20 a week.

- One dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be parsimony that such close imputation of One dollar and eighty- seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man butcher until one check burned with the silent Christmas. Three times Della counted it

- Della had a idea to get her hair cut and sell it. Where she stopped a sign read Sofronie hair goods of all times. Will you buy my hair Della asked a girl named Madame? ''I buy hair said'' said Madame take your hat off and lets see how it looks. Madame offered $20 for her hair, and down went the hair as she cut it. Give me it quick Della said. Della left and started ransacking stores for a present for Jim.

- She searched for a while and finally found a great present for Jim a platinum fob to go on his watch. Della went home and started cooking chops on the stove. Forty minutes later, it was 7:00 she heard Jim coming in. When Jim came in she could not read his expression on his face it wasn't any expression. Jim darling don't be upset I had my hair cut off for you you haven't seen the great gift I have gotten yet.
- She showed him the present and then he told her that he had sold his watch for her watch to get her combs, but now your hair is gone said Jim . Jim and Della decided to put their gifts away because they could not use the presents yet, so they put their present away to focus on Christmas.
- Della and Jim both wanted to get each other presents so bad that they both made sacrifices . Della cut her hair, but then Jim got her combs. Jim sold his watch, but Della bought him a fob for the watch. They couldn't use the presents so they put them away and focused on Christmas.
