  • The Confederacy had stormed Fort Sumter two months prior to Bull Run. In exchange, the Union devised a strategy to seize Richmond. General Irvin McDowell was instructed to assault right away by Abraham Lincoln, in the hopes of bringing the war to a close. McDowell was concerned that his soldiers would not be ready for the onslaught, so he asked Lincoln if he could hold off the attack, but Lincoln declined. The First Battle of Bull Run was started because Lincoln wanted the offensive to be completed as soon as possible.
