- Elie debates on keeping his faith in God. He debates over this because he believes God hasn't done anything for him and his family so, he loses faith in God and decides not to fast.
- Man vs. Society
- "An infinitely long train, composed of roofless cattle cars. The SS shoved us inside, a hundred per car: we were so skinny!" (Wiesel 97)
- Elie had to get a gold crown removed. They took him to the camps dentists and removed it with a spoon and no medicine to numb it. Elie truly felt like a person in this part of the novel.
- Man vs. Self
- "Hey kid how old are you?""Fifteen""No, you're eighteen""But Im not," I said. "Im fifteen""FOOL LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY."(Wiesel 55)
- The prisoners were not allowed to bring water so during their march they would eat snow off of each others back. The conditions of the march were icy and freezing so it was a very harsh march.
- This is when the Germans are turning their heads against the Jews because they believed that the Jews are bad people. Also, the men are in a single car with originally 80 people but they have gotten so skinny and have been so badly malnourished that they could now fit 100 people in one cattle car.
- When questioned by the S.S officer, Elie lies about his age and occupation so that he goes into labor camp rather than the crematorium. Elie lies about his age because the inmate told him that if they were too young or too old, they would be killed by the Germans right away.
