  • The Englishman and Santiago first meet in the caravan as they wait to leave. When Santiago takes out Urim and Thummim, the Englishman instantly recognizes them.
  •
  • Santiago thinks the Englishman wants to buy them, but the Englishman notes they would not be worth much to most people. They are, however, very valuable to those who understand how to use them.
  • Seeing someone else who believes in the mystical makes the Englishman think that meeting Santiago is an omen, and both men's interests in omens pushes them to continue speaking with each other and become close.
  •
  • The Englishman believes that truth can be found in books and learning. The study of alchemy has consumed him. Santiago, on the other hand, learns through experience and observation of the world.
  • When they two switch their methods, they find they cannot learn or appreciate how the other operates. Santiago becomes frustrated with the books and cannot understand what the Englishman sees in them.
  • At the oases, the Englishman reveals he carries a revolver to help him ''trust in people.'' Santiago was assaulted and robbed as soon as he arrived in Tangiers. Later, at the pyramids, he is also attacked and has no weapon to defend himself. The Englishman, on the other hand, knew he was traveling into dangerous lands and prepared accordingly.
