  • Only with the guards by your side.
  • Father, can I leave the palace?
  • Make way for the prince! Clear the roads!
  • This is where I will find the truth.
  • Siddhartha was born during 500s B.C.E. in Nepal. He grew up as a Hindu Prince, and his father was a king. He lived a life of wealth and luxury and was shielded from suffering, sickness, and death.
  • When will I find the truth about life?
  • Siddhartha’s father shielded him from everything unpleasant because he did not want Siddhartha to become a holy man (Spiritual Leader). Instead, Siddhartha’s father wanted him to become a king, so he made sure that when Siddhartha left the palace he never encountered the unpleasantness of the truth.
  • Peace...
  • Life...
  • Truth...
  • Wisdom...
  • When Siddhartha left the palace without his guards in search of the truth, he encountered an old man, a diseased man, a dead man, and a holy content man. When Siddhartha experienced these things he realized that he too would face old age, sickness, and death. After these sights Siddhartha voyaged out to find the truth about life by becoming a holy content man like he saw outside the palace.
  • The Middle Way is our perfect balance between too much and too little.
  • Siddhartha began his search for the truth about life, suffering, and death by cutting his hair and trading his wealthy clothes for old ones of a religious seeker. In search of truth, Siddhartha began to study the ways of meditation and different teachings of the Hindu gurus that he had encountered. Then he tried becoming an ascetic where he attempted a state of self denial where he became weak and thin without his physical needs.
  • After many years of being an ascetic, Siddhartha realized that self-denial is not the way to find the truth. So Siddhartha decided to sit under a Bodhi Tree where he then meditated for 49 days and nights. After this long stage of meditation Siddhartha understood the cycles of life, rebirth, and death, came to know that state of perfect wisdom, and reached enlightenment. From then on, Siddhartha was known as the Buddha.
  • After Buddha reached enlightenment, he escaped the “wheel of existence” but chose to stay in the people’s world so that he could teach others what he had learned. For many years to come Buddha traveled across India teaching anyone who wanted to learn how to reach the path of enlightenment.
