- "Daddy," she said, "do you think you could buy me abook?" "A book?" he said. "What d'you want a flaming book for?""To read, Daddy." "What's wrong with the telly, for heaven's sake? We've got a lovely telly with a twelve-inch screen and now you comeasking for a book! You're getting spoiled, my girl!"
- When he got home that evening he still couldn't get the hatoff. "Don't be silly," his wife said. "Come here. I'll take it offfor you." She gave the hat a sharp yank. Mr Wormwood let out a yellthat rattled the window-panes. "Ow-w-w!" he screamed."Don't do that! Let go! You'll take half the skin off myforehead!"
- The brother gave a wave throughthe rear window, but the other two didn't even look back.Miss Honey was still hugging the tiny girl in her arms andneither of them said a word as they stood there watching thebig black car tearing round the corner at the end of the roadand disappearing for ever into the distance.
