- Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States at this time. He lead the Union during the Civil War and was Republican. Later, he was assassinated.
- Military Leadership
- Ulysses S. Grant- led the Union Army as a Commanding General
- George Meade- Served as a Army Officer and civil engineer for the Union Army
- Military Strategy
- Anaconda Plan- Produce blockade so the South can't trade with foreign countries; divide sections of the South and capture them- leading to the capitol's capture
- Population
- With more population, there were more soldiers available to fight, making the Union outnumber the Confederate
- Transportation
- Almost the entire North was connected through various transportation systems- making it easier for the Union Army to travel
- Industrial Advantage
- The North was pretty much self sufficient since they owned 90% of the World's favorites
