- Marjane does not suffer any kind of oppression or bad things throughout the beginning of the book. she did not live under a brutal regime or backwards-thinking government. she had friends of all types and could think whatever she wanted.
- However, the Shah regime had taken over and had more backwards thinking oppressive ideals he forced on his people.

- most, including marys parents, were more modernized and forward-thinking. they took part in protests against the shah and all that faced their safety and rights.

- With family members being arrested and a few executed life was becoming unbearable under the Shah's corrupt rule.
- The Iran-Iraq war sparked during the Islamic revolution and life was became unbearable with bombs dropping all around their area and friends.
- with the shah's regime growing ever stronger they feared their daughter being killed, or worse. they sent her off the states at the age of 13 for a better life.
