  • Hi class! today we will be learning about the history of transportation!
  •
  • The first mode of transportation was boats. Those who lived in Australia 60,000-40,000 years ago are credited with being the first to travel at sea. The earliest known boat is a logboat, or a dugout.
  • Logboats are made by hollowing out a tree.
  • Next came horses and wheeled vehicles. Experts believe that domestication came around 4000 BCE. The first wheeled vehicles were used in around 3500 BCE. It is beleived that at this time there were four wheeled wagons.
  • These animals and wagons make tranportation a lot easier! Now we can move things around faster and we do less work!
  • In Ancient Rome they had really good road systems. The roads were made of concrete and covered stone. They could travel by chariot, carts and litters. Litters were carts that wealthy people used, but they were caried by slaves. Boats helped them get to other countries and they were very important during war.
  • Carts are really heavy, so the horse pulling it gets tired easily. It needs to take time to rest, traveling long distances isn't such a good idea, but they can carry lots of people at once.
  • In 1769, the watt steam enigine changed everything. In 1783, the French inventor Claude de Jouffroy created the worlds first steamship. There wasn't enough interest to keep it going though. Robert Fulton furthered the technology and in 1807, the Clemont completed the 150 mile trip from New York to Albany.
  • Claude de Jouffroy's steamship is important! It is a better way to travel across water. His boat wasn't good, but we can make it work! We have to conutinue working on this!
  • Last of all, Orville and Wilbur Wright, pulled off the first official powered flight in 1903. I hope you guys learned something today. See you tomorrow!
