  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, when the residents realize this blackout isn't normal they start suspecting and blaming each other which starts a conflict between Steve and Charlie. This scene supports the theme because it shows that since the residents are getting suspicious, they start blaming each other which starts destroying their friendship. Another example is that out of fear and suspicion, Charlie just shoots the figure only to find out that it's his neighbor. This scene supports the theme because it shows that since Charlie was scared, instead of asking who the figure was, he just shot him which only caused the situation to get worse and destroy his neighbor's life. Lastly, Charlie blames Tommy to direct the attention away from him, making the residents question if it was really Tommy. This scene supports the theme by showing that fear can cause people to blame others for no reason. This shows that being scared and judgemental can ruin a lot of important things in life.
