  • As I continue higher in my own education path, starting in grade school, fast forwarding to my masters program, I have made leaps and bounds when it comes to understand the importance of, and utilizing critical thinking skills. I have begun to understand that incorporating skills such as researching topics, discussing topics with peers, and identifying problems and solutions based on reason from references needs to be a key part of what we are teaching our students.
  • Oh, hey there! Today we will be discussing who I am as a critical thinker! We will determine how this impacts my view of myself as a teacher, while also looking at how my image of myself as a teacher will influence my interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • I am now a firm believer in critical thinking skills being a developmental part of critical decision making skills. In order to have the ability to make critical decisions, a person must understand how to critically think through the process. I believe I have adopted the role of being a critical thinker, and one who allows myself to make decisions based upon reason. This reason is directly based on the critical thinking process that I allow myself to conduct before making a decision or resulting to an action. This will help me when it comes time to help my students understand the importance of critical thinking skills.
  • I have had many moments of realization during the past two months, going from once a educator not understanding the importance of critical thinking skills, to one who now formulates multiple ideas on how to add critical thinking skills to my classes.
  • As I put together the knowledge I have learned pertaining to the different components of critical thinking, specifically in ITL 680 and ITL 682, I will do a much better job at emphasizing the critical thinking opportunities in my lessons going forward. Allowing time for discussion, questioning, and reasoning for my students.
  • When it comes to how this impacts my view of myself as a teacher, it defiantly affects it in a positive way. I believe I have realized the opportunity I have to emphasize and teach the importance of critical thinking skills to my students. With this opportunity, I will create lifelong critical thinking skills that my students can use for a variety of situations
  • How will my image of myself as a teacher influence my interactions with others?
  • Example 2: I will be sure to use my critical thinking skills learned to spark meaningful and deep conversations with the parents of my students regarding their progress in my classroom. It is very important to create a balance between the amount of good things you say about a kid, and the amount of negative things said. If having a conversation with a parent involves discussing something negative, that conversation should always entail a "but your student has been doing good in this". That way the parents feel like not every conversation is about what their student isn't doing.
  • Example 1: I have great confidence in myself as an educator of our youth. Therefor, I believe my interactions with my students and others will be very impactful and meaningful. I plan to always show professionalism when interacting with others in the workplace regardless of their title. Having such confidence will allow me to also communicate my goals of my classroom before the school year to my students and parents. This will allow them a chance to understanding what will be expected of their student when attending my class.
  • Examples of how this growth impacts my teaching practicesExample 1: I will be sure to implement critical thinking skills in my physical education curriculum by always ensuring the students understand the WHY behind what they are doing. This allows for all three parts of our learning to occur; psychomotor, cognitive, and social. Example 2: I will be sure to create plenty of situations allowing the students to practice critical thinking skills by creating moments where they are forced to question their outcomes. When a students has to question why and how they came up with the outcome, they are using critical thinking skills at one of the highest levels we as educators could ask of our students. Example 3: Lastly is the use of communication skills. Providing students with an opportunity that allows them to hear what others have to say, and also have your peers hear what you have to say. is a a great way to practice critical listening and communication skills. In these conversations, peers can use critical thinking skills to better understand a different perspective other than their own.
  • Off to learn more ways to use and emphasize critical thinking skills in my P.E classes!!
