  • Hello Doctor! Are there different types of Diabetes Mellitus? Both of us have this condition, but our treatments differ.
  • There are two types of diabtes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Type 1 Diabetes is an inherited condition that frequently manifests during childhood, while type 2 Diabetes is predominantly influenced by diet and gradually develops.
  • If you have type 1 Diabetes, your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin.
  • In type 2 Diabetes, the body makes some insulin, but it doesn't work well. The pancreas can't handle high blood sugar caused by bad eating habits and no physical activity.
  • Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes can suddenly show up and include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, unintentional weight loss, irritability, mood changes, fatigue, weakness, and blurred vision.
  • Type 2 signs and symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, unintended weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing sores, frequent infections, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
  • Genetics and exposure to viruses and environmental factors may also play a role.
  • Type 2 diabetes occurs when muscle, fat, and liver cells become unresponsive to insulin. This leads to insufficient intake of sugar because these cells do not interact properly with insulin. As a result, the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.
  • People with type 2 diabetes may not require insulin as their bodies produce some. Treating type 2 diabetes includes a balanced diet, weight loss, monitoring blood sugar, and exercise.
  • Type 1 diabetes can be treated by monitoring blood sugar levels, using insulin, following a balanced diet, and exercising.
