  • This is the first stage of ecological succession, primary succession. It's normally caused by natural disasters such as volcanic eruption , which leaves nothing but rock. The rock does eventually turn into soil which is essential for new biotic factors to grow. But at the start of primary succession there are only abiotic factors.
  • The plants you see are called lichens, these producers are the first living things to appear during primary succession called pioneer species. Lichens are important because they can live on rock and they eventually turn the rock into soil, which other organisms need to live in this community. This biome will eventually become a forest even though it just looks like rock right now.
  • This is the climax community stage, this is when plants grow back to a place that was once bare rock, this is the stage when the homeostasis in an ecosystem is balanced with the population of consumers and producers. The ecosystem has great sustainability.
  • Now, the forest has a lot of biodiversity, there are climax species that include, tall trees, bushes and even grasses. This is important because it takes a long time to go from bare rock to good and fertile soil for there to be climax species. The tall trees also reproduce small trees which keeps the population going.
  • The other type of succession is secondary succession. This occurs when a disturbance in the ecosystem occurs and leaves nothing but soil. These disturbances are things such as forest fires or weathering.
  • Eventually, plants and animals come back to the area after secondary succession. It's easier for them because there had already been soil. After secondary succession, the area too becomes a climax community.
