Texte du Storyboard

  • Master Aristotle, the stars seem to shift and change as we travel north or south. Could this be because the Earth is… curved somehow?
  • An interesting notion, Plato. The ancients believed the Earth was flat, a vast disk resting on the back of a giant Atlas.
  • But look at that ship, Master! As it sails further away, the hull disappears first, then the sails! Wouldn't this happen if the Earth curved away from our sight?
  • Indeed! Some philosophers, like Pythagoras, have suggested the Earth might be a sphere, like a perfect ball.
  • A round Earth? But wouldn't the water flow off the edges?
  • And where would the sun go at night? Below the Earth?
  • These are valid questions! Perhaps the Earth is a sphere, but surrounded by a vast ocean that keeps the water in place. As for the sun, it might travel around the sphere, hidden from our sight for a time.
  • And consider the great eclipses, where the Earth casts a round shadow on the moon! How could this be unless the Earth itself were round?
  • Indeed, my student. The pursuit of knowledge never ends!
  • These are just theories, Master, but perhaps with further observation and study, we can unlock the true form of our world!
  • One of our great scholars, Eratosthenes, approximated the circumference of our Earth! He used experimental measurements of shadows in two cities and geometry.
  • Wow, that would really be a mind-numbing task.
  • Yeah, our great philosophers really make arguments and knowledge, don't they. I guess I do believe that the Earth is a sphere now.
  • So, how's that sound? You think that the Earth is a sphere now?
