  • Character I: The Crucible
  • Character II: The Crucible
  • This can't be right.
  • Character III: The Crucible
  • Character I: Reverend Parris is not only the easiest character to dislike but is also the driving force behind the trials besides Abigale (Miller, Arthur 1-152). It would be easy to assume this character was inspired by the very real Senator McCarthy, the one behind the Red Scare and the fear of communists infiltrating our government.
  • Character I: McCarthyism (The Red Scare)
  • Character II: Reverend Hale while not motivated by the same thing as Elia Kazan, still plays a very similar role when comparing the events of history and The Crucible. Hale eventually realizes his mistakes and feels extremely guilt still committing many citizens in Salem to the noose due to "evidence" of witchcraft. For example, Reverend Hale is convinced early on in act I that Tituba is a witch (Miller, Arthur 8-9).
  • Character II: McCarthyism (The Red Scare)
  • I know beyond reasonable doubt that these critics are indeed communist sympathizers.
  • Character III: While I doubt that Miller thought of himself while developing the character of John Procter I must admit there are many undeniable similarities between these two people. John the main critic of the trials is at the end punished for his alleged and unproven crimes of witchcraft by death but really for speaking out against the trials in the first place. This is similar to Miller being tried twice for his work criticizing McCarthyism and the Red Scare.
  • Character III: McCarthyism (The Red Scare)

  • Character I: McCarthy fear mongered the American public into believing their very own government was infiltrated by the communists. This lead to unjust trials and convictions additionally anyone significant who criticized these hearings was considered a sympathizer and blacklisted or worse (Daniel, Alex. "McCarthyism and the Red Scare").
  • Character II: Elia Kazan plays a similar role in history to that of Reverend Hale in The Crucible. While I would argue Kazan's motives are not as pure as revered Hale (Daniel, Alex. "McCarthyism and the Red Scare"). and much less forgivable because he never comes around to realizing his mistakes. They both go around and accuse people with little evidence or worse just suspicion and this leads to many lives being ruined during the Red Scare and in the context of The Crucible.
  • Character III: Miller while not hanged at the end of his life has other similarities with John Procter. For example, being on of the most significant people of his time to speak out against McCarthy and was Blacklisted for it. He criticized the courts for holding trials simply because someone was a little suspicious and it was events like this that not only inspired characters like John Procter but also the story as a whole (Pierce, Adien J. "McCarthyism Wiki).
