  • The death of Julius Caesar created a struggle of power between his supporters and those who organized his death.

  • Mark Antony had been consul, and was close friends with Caesar. He announced his will which revealed that he had left 300 sesterces to every man in Rome. This turned the people against Caesar’s murder and they were forced to flee.
  • Mark Antony was challenged by Octavian, who was Caesar’s great nephew who was 19.

  • When the Senate attempted to regain control of Rome, Antony and Octavian had 130 of them murdered. Their property was seized and given to those willing to support the new rulers.
  • Caesar was impressed by the intelligence of Octavian and adopted him so that he could gain power when ceaser died.
  • Mark Antony and Octavian decided to share power between them.

  • Mark showed commitment to Octavian by divorcing his wife and marrying Octavians sister.
  • Octavia will you marry me?
  • I will!
  • It was agreed that the Roman Empire would be divided between the two men. Octavian taking the Western Europe area. And Mark taking the eastern territories.
  • Why did he do this?
  • Octavian was furious that his sister should be treated in this way. The people of Rome were also angry because Mark Antony had married a foreigner.
  • Will you marry me Cleopatra?
  • The Parthians invaded Roman territory, occupying Syria, advancing into Asia Minor and installing Antigonus as puppet king in Judaea. Mark Antony sent his general Publius Ventidius to oppose this invasion.
  • While Mark was in Egypt he met Cleopatra. He fell in love with her and divorced Octavia, and married Cleopatra.

  • Mark came back to Egypt and persuaded Cleopatra to lend him the money he needed to form an alliance with Herod the Great. Antony felt strong enough to invade Parthia.He was forced to retreat because their was an army of 100,000 Romans. Octavian began attacking Mark for leaving Octavia.
  •  Octavian defeated Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium. Mark Antony and Cleopatra were forced to flee to Alexandria in Egypt. When Octavian's troops surrounded Alexandria, Mark Antony committed suicide by falling on his sword.
  •  Octavian claimed that Cleopatra was attempting to gain control of the Roman Empire by marrying Mark Antony. Cleopatra replied that her son Caesarion, and not Octavian, was Caesar's true heir.
  • Cleopatra was captured by Octavian who planned to take her back to Rome as prisoner. However, she was determined not to be humiliated in this way and arranged for a poisonous snake to be smuggled into her room. She then committed suicide by allowing the snake to bite her.
