Hi my name is Mahmoud Bishara and I will tell you a bit of info about me and my family. We used to live in Aleppo, Syria until the Syrian government and rebels got in a Civil war. We had to flee for our lives and leave for Germany immediately to safety, by foot and car.
Syria
When leaving Aleppo for Germany, I went with my family. My family is my mom, dad, my sister Hana and my brother Walled. My family's background is Syrian and my only friend was Khalid. I barely could talk to him because I had to be invisible to survive. I couldn't attract any attention to myself without being killed. Sadly though, he was killed in an airstrike.

I love my family a lot. I usually have to take care of my baby sister Hana or my younger brother Walled. I am very kind and caring, even with my friend Khalid. A quote from the novel is "But right then, Khalid had been curled into a ball on the ground, his hands around his head while the older boys kicked him. “Not so smart now, are you, pig?” one of them had said. “Shia should know their place! This is Syria, not Iran!” Mahmoud had bristled. The differences between Sunnis and Shiites was an excuse. These boys had just wanted to beat someone up. With a battle cry that would have made Wolverine proud, Mahmoud had launched himself at Khalid’s attackers. And he had been beaten up as badly as Khalid."
