  • Bella: So how will SOH CAH TOA help me find the height of a building?
  • Vincent: Well, I calculated the angle of elevation to the top of the building, and the distance from that to the edge of the building. The angle of elevation is 70 degrees and it is 40 meters from the building.
  •
  • B
  • A
  • 40 m
  • 70°
  • C
  • Vincent: Now, you use one of the trigonometry functions to find the height.
  • Bella: Okay, so I know one of the angles, which will be my reference angle, and I know the side adjacent to it. I also know that the height would be the side that is opposite to it. The function that uses opposite and adjacent sides is tangent right?
  • Vincent: Yes, exactly. Now all you have to do it plug in the values that I gave you to solve for the missing side, the height.
  • Bella: That seems simple enough. So, since tanθ= opposite/ adjacent, θ=70, opposite= side AB and the adjacent side is 40 meters.
  • Tan 70° is about 2.75 so the formula now, is:2.75= AB/40
  • Vincent: Yes, now you have to bring the 40 over to the left side so you can isolate and solve for AB.
  • Bella: Okay, so now it's: 2.75 x 40 = ABAB= (2.75)(40)AB= 110So, the height of the building is about 110 meters.
  • Vincent: Wow, you understood SOH CAH TOA really quickly, great job Bella!
  • Bella: Thanks, now I know how tall the building was. Although, I was just kidding when I meant I wonder how tall it was. Still, thank you Vincent for teaching me how to solve for it!
  • Vincent: No problem haha but we've been standing here for 20 minutes over nothing?
  • Vincent: And it was fun for me to be the teacher for once :)
  • Bella; Yup, but it was fun to learn something new.
