  • Crisostomo Ibarra returned to his country after studying in Europe for a few years. Capitan Tiago hosted a banquet in his honor at his Manila residence.
  • Lieutenant Guevara approached Ibarra as he was leaving Capitan Tiago's house.
  • Crisostomo visited his sweetheart, Maria Clara, the next day. After, Ibarra went to San Diego to look for his father's grave.
  • Padre Damaso, a fat Franciscan priest who had been assigned for many years in Ibarra's native town (San Diego); Fray Sybila, the young Dominican curate of Binondo; Lieutenant Guevarra of the Guardia Civil; and Doña Victorina, wife of a fake Spanish physician Tiburcio de Espadaa were among those who attended the gathering. Don Rafael Ibarra, Crisostomo's father, was a friend of Capitan Tiago. Maria Clara, Capitan Tiago's alleged daughter, was Crisostomo's fiancée.
  • Ibarra hosted a picnic for Maria Clara and her family at the lake when they arrived in San Diego. Ibarra had saved Elias, from being killed by a crocodile, during the picnic.
  • He told him about his father's tragic death in San Diego. Guevara revealed that Don Rafael was falsely accused of being a heretic and filibuster by a San Diego curate because he did not attend mass or confession. Don Rafael once witnessed a scuffle between a Spanish tax collector and a frail young lad. He had accidentally pushed and killed the nasty Spaniard while attempting to defend the weak youngster. Don Rafael was therefore imprisoned and tragically died in his cell.
  • Ibarra and Maria Clara attended the morning mass officiated by Padre Salvi and Padre Damaso on the day of the San Diego town festival.
  • He had learned from the grave-digger that his father's body had been dug up on the curate's orders and relocated to the Chinese cemetery. However, since it was raining and Don Rafael's body was heavy, the grave-digger simply threw him into the river. When Ibarra saw San Diego parish priest Padre Salvi, he became enraged by what he had discovered. However, Salvi informed him that Damaso was the parish priest in the town at the time of Don Rafael's death.
  • Later that day, Ibarra organized a banquet. Padre Damaso, who was present at the feast, made a public attack on Ibarra's dead father's dignity.
  • Some members of the Guardia Civil arrived later in the picnic, pursuing Elias, who had already assaulted Padre Damaso and the alferez. However, Elias had already gotten away before the Guardia Civil arrived. Later, Ibarra received word from the Spanish government that his donation of a school in San Diego had been authorized.
  • During the mass, Elias quietly approached Ibarra and informed him of the plot to murder him at the school's cornerstone laying ceremony. As a result, the platform fell during the inauguration, just as Ibarra was ready to cement the schoolhouse's foundation. Thankfully, Elias had rescued Ibarra, and the man who had been hired to kill Ibarra was murdered in the incident.
  • The enraged host lunged at the ill-mannered friar with a dagger, almost killing Damaso if Maria Clara hadn't intervened just in time. Ibarra was excommunicated as a result, and his engagement to Maria Clara was called off after Damaso persuaded Capitan Tiago to forbid the lady from marrying Ibarra.
