It is Carnival in Italy. The narrator, Montresor, invites Fortunato, a wine expert, to try an Amontillado, a very expensive and gourmet wine. Fortunato is drunk and has seemed to have caught a cold. Montresor seems mentally unstable.
Climax
Fortunato insults Montresor's name though it is not known what Fortunato exactly said. Montresor swears revenge on Fortunato for this.
Falling action
Montresor leads Fortunato down into some catacombs where he claims to be keeping the Amontillado. To remedy his cough Montresor gives Fortunato a bottle of wine, getting him drunker as they go down the steps.
Conclusion
They reach the Catacombs only for Fortunato to be confused about Where the Amonitallado is. Suddenly Montresor chains him to a hole in the wall and starts walling him up with some bricks and mortar he hid under some bones.
As he continues walling up Fortunato he occasionally stops to listen to Fortunatos pleas and screams for him to stop and let him out.
Montresor finishes walling him in and leaves the catacombs. Fortunato's body wasn't found for half a century later.
