- The shang dynasty like all civalizations had a very strict social structure
- Many served as chariot warriors and were renowned for their great warfare skills. In return for their important service to the king, they were able to control their land as they wished. The noble life was one of luxury. Their days were spent directing the lives of the lower classes from grand palaces.
- Artisans and craftsmen comprised the middle class of Shang society. Their largest contribution was their work with bronze, which the Chinese developed as early as 1500 BCE. Their work with bronze was a very important aspect of society.
- Shang traders tended to avoid foreigners. This is an exception to Fujian, Taiwan, Korea, and other nearby regions. Traders traded items made by artisans, and sculptors. Skilled Chinese artisans carved jade and marble, made porcelain tableware, wove silk, painted on silk with ink, and made many items from bronze.
- The majority of the people who lived under the Shang Dynasty were farmers. They grew millet, wheat and barley but not so much rice, which was farmed further south. A large irrigation scheme was constructed to bring the water from the Yellow River to the crops. They also kept sheep, pigs and oxen.
- Slavery is known to have existed as early as the Shang dynasty (18th–12th century bce) in China. It has been studied thoroughly in ancient Han China (206 bce–25 ce), where perhaps 5 percent of the population was enslaved. Slavery continued to be a feature of Chinese society down to the 20th century.
