  • As darkness began to fall over the battle, the report of Harold's death began to fly around the field . It is believed that Harold was killed when an arrow struck him in the eye, during the final assault by the Normans.
  • William's victory at Hastings owed much to his planning and experience but he was also very fortunate. For example, if he had invaded in summer, as Harold expected him to, he would have had to have fought an army twice the size but the winds stopped William from crossing the Channel. Also he was lucky because when then wind changed that meant he could invade also brought Harald Hardrada from Norway to York meaning that William arrived unopposed
  • Whilst Harold was marching his soldiers up north and then straight back down south again in just two weeks, William was building a castle in the south and raiding the surrounding areas for food and other supplies. William was able to conserve his energy whilst Harold was using his.
  • William had many years of experience on the battlefield so he knew how to boost his men's morale and had good tactics such as the feigned retreat that his cavalry used to break the shield wall of the English .
  • William winning the Battle of Hastings resulted in the end of the Anglo-Saxon rule of England.
