  • Denial is when one refuses to accept reality, and because of this may loose awareness of surroundings. This may be done to avoid facing certain emotions.
  • Intellectualization
  • I can not just sit here and be upset. I have got to do something.
  • This is an unconscious defense mechanism, when negative emotions such as frustration and/or anger are transferredto an unrelated person or thing.
  • Sublimation
  • I am going to study so hard that this won't ever happen again.
  • An unconscious mechanism in which a person acts opposite to their true feelings. In order to replace feelings such as anxiety or anger one may act different due to impulses.

  • A defense mechanism where conflicts or problems are dealt with in an intellectual manner. Actions are carefully processed.
  • But what can I do. I can't change the fact that I failed.

  • This is one of the last phases when one uses their unacceptable emotions and channels it towards a socially acceptable behavior.
