  • Hey Karen! You are here. Let me share to you what I have learned in UCSP. It's all about concepts, aspects and changes of culture and society
  • Wow! That's interesting! Sure, please share it to me and I will listen to you.
  • Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor offered a broad definition, stating that culture is "complext whole" which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.
  • Complex whole? What does it mean?
  • The "complex whole" suggest that culture cannot be simply broken down into a set of characteristics. It means that an understanding of a part can only be achieved in relation to other parts of the system.
  • Ah! So, it requires an approach where all at once, one can get an appreciation of what culture is all about without being bothered by its complexity or by any definition that attempts to capture such complexity?
  • Yes, my teacher taught those in our class. The characteristics of it are culture are social and it varies from society to society. It can also be shared, learned and transmitted. Culture is contiuous and comulative. Lastly, it is gratifying and idealistic.
  • Yes, you're right. But did you know that there are seven characteristics of culture?
  • Wow, you are so smart.
  • Thank you! But, I am wondering. As culture and society are our topic, what are numerous and varied causes of social change?
  • There are four common causes, as recognize by social scientist. These are the technology, social institutions, population and environment. All four of these areas can impact when and how society changes.
  • Ah! So we are currently experiencing social change because of pandemic due to the virus spreading in our environment?
