  • Classical Conditioning Through Dinner Time
  • Phase 1My Mom is such an amazing cook, and eating supper is something I look forward to every day. The smell of her food is the unconditioned stimulus. The unconditioned response to the smell is the feeling of hunger. Which is because of smell of the food I know I am about to eat. The smell was the only thing that made me automatically know supper was soon. Things like the garage door opening or other noises were the neutral stimulus because they had no meaning to me.
  • Phase 2I have now determined that the garage door opening plus the smell of the food, mean its dinner. By pairing the neutral stimulus with the unconditioned response my body receives its unconditioned response.
  • Phase 3 I have now learned that just the garage door opening means my mother is home and that tells my brain supper is soon without even smelling it. The once neutral stimulus has now changed into the conditioned stimulus as my brain learned to make the connection to the garage door. I now get the feeling of hunger when I hear the garage door opening because that means my mom is about to cook. This feeling is the conditioned response.
  • Is that the sound of the garage door opening? You know what time it is!!
