- Christopher is a 15 year old boy with autism. One night, he finds his neighbors dog on the lawn impaled with a garden fork. Christopher decides he needs to figure out who killed him.
- Christopher discovers who killed Wellington
- Christopher saw five red cars in a row which meant it would be a super good day, so he decides to engage in conversation with one of his neighbors. He asks Mrs. Alexander if Mr. Shears is evil because that's what his father said. After realizing no one told Christopher, she tells him that his mother and Mr. Shears had an affair. It is also important to note that Christopher was only told by his dad that his mother had a heart attack and died two years ago.

- While searching for the book that he had been writing that his father took from him, he finds a box of letters addressed to himself. After opening one and seeing that it is from his mom but the date is 18 months after she died, he realizes he needs to wait until his father leaves so he can retrieve and read the rest of them. After reading some of the letters his father walks in on him and explains that he lied about his mother dying.

- Christopher's dad ends up telling him that he killed Wellington because he felt that Mrs. Shears liked the dog more than him. Once Christopher realizes his father is not joking, he runs away in fear of his safety.
- Christopher decides his only option is to get on a train to London and live with his mom. After getting help from many people along the way he ends up in London. He manages to find his mother who is living with Mr. Shears. Even though Mr. Shears does not approve, they take Christopher in.
