  • madame Velonde visits Desiree's baby
  • DESIREE AND ARMAND
  • DESIREE, HER SON AND A LITTLE QUADROON BOY
  • The story begins with Madame Vamonde visiting Desiree and her baby. On her way to L’Abri, she remembers Desiree’s childhood. Desiree was a found by Monsieur Valmonde. He found her lying in the shadow of the big stone pillar, as he was galloping through the gateway to Valmonde. The general opinion was that she was left behind by a party of Texans, but Madame Valmonde believed Desiree was sent to her by God as she was not able to have her own children.
  • THE REASON
  • It means he is not white, it means you are not white.
  • After 18 years, Armand Augbiny falls in love with Desiree, even though they have been with each other since they were little kids, Desiree’s origin should be examined, as proposed by Monsieur before their relationship becomes more serious. However, Armand is head over heels that he ignores about Desiree’s background and decides that it does not matter if she does not have a family name, if he can give her a perfectly good one, and so they get married.
  • THE ESCAPE
  • I am not going back home......
  • Their family was indeed going well at first but when the baby is three months old, the situation in the house changes. Desiree senses there is something wrong. Also, Armand becomes cold and avoids Desiree and the baby. One day, Desiree is sitting in her room and starts observing her child and a little quadroon boy who was fanning it. The similarity between them frightens her and she sends the boy away.
  • THE REVELATION
  • THE LETTER
  • When Armand went back home, Desiree asked him about the baby. He responds that the baby is not really white, which means that she is not white either. Desiree said all her physical features that highly suggest that she is white, but her husband angrily told her she is as white as their mixed-race slaves.
  • Inspite of that, Desiree writes to her mother to ask for help. Madame Valmonde told her to go back home because she still loves her. Desiree then asked her husband about his opinion and he immediately sent her away. Desiree takes her baby and leaves the house. But, she did not take the road going home, but instead she disappears in the bayou.
  • After that, Armand puts up a bonfire to burn Desiree’s things. Armand finds several letters among the stuff he decides to throw away. Most of them are little scribblings Desiree sent him in the days of their engagement, but he also finds one that for his mother to his father. In the letter, his mother thanks God for her husband’s love, but she also reveals that she is grateful that her son will never know that his mother belongs to the race that is cursed by slavery.
