  • My name is Chris and I immigrated to America. The pull factor of going to America would be that there is more land and more jobs to make money from. I have two kids that are going with me so it is really important that I find a job to produce money for my family. The push factor for leaving Ireland would be that there is a cotton famine happening right now.
  • We began our journey to America on a train to get to a seaport. When we arrived at the seaport, we boarded a steamship. Once we were on the ship me and my kids traveled in steerage. Steerage is the lower deck of a ship, where the cargo is stored. The trip across the Atlantic Ocean lasted one to two weeks. The ships divided passengers by money and class. First- and second-class passengers stayed in rooms and cabins. But most people were in third class so they were in steerage.
  • Once we got there officers passed out numbered identity tags. Men, women, and children struggled off the boat carrying food, cloths, and suitcases. They followed one another to a path that entered the striking red brick building. The immigrants entered the Baggage Room on the building's ground floor. They dropped off their belongings and headed to the Registry Room, where the medical and legal inspections took place.
  • The waiting area in the Great Hall had long metal rails that helped maintain an orderly line as people went through the medical and legal inspections. The noise in this room could be intense. The sounds of thousands of voices bounced off the ceilings.
  • The first test was a "six-second physical." A doctor lookes for any signs of illness or contagious diseases. The doctor noted whether immigrants limped or were short of breath, if their eyes were red, if they acted disturbed or seemed otherwise abnormal.
  • Challenges I faced in America were language barriers,Cultural differences, and transportation issues.Other challenges immigrants faced were housing, raising children, and employment opportunities.
