  • Policies and the people:- Since the mid eighteenth century, the Britishers have been taking over the power of Indian rulers and many Indians began to feel that the British were destroying their religions, their social customs and their traditional way of life.
  • We are taking over your territory! Hand over the throne now! Or else we will have no choice but to kill you!
  • A Mutiny becomes a popular rebellion:- In May 1857, the English East India Company faced a massive rebellion. In several places, sepoys mutinied beginning from Meerut and a large number of people rose up in rebellion. It is considered as the biggest armed resistance to colonialism in the nineteenth century.
  • From Meerut to Delhi:- On 9th May, many sepoys were hung for refusing to use the new cartridges as it was suspected of being covered with the fat of cow and pig. The response of the soldiers to this was the uprising of a major rebellion with the help of mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar.
  • The rebellion spreads:- Many rulers such as Rani Lakshmibai, Nana Saheb, Begum Hazrat Mahal etc. took an active part in organizing the uprising againt the British. The British were not prepared for this and were outnumbered and defeated in many battles.
  • The company fights back:- The Company brought in reinforcements from England, passed new laws, recaptured Delhi and executed and captured the main contributors of the rebellion.
  • Aftermath:- The British had regained control over India by the end of 1859 but, they could not carry on ruling the land with the same policies. So, they passed on new laws to make the administrations more firm.
  • This new policy is now.... PASSED!
