Hello! My name is Rocky and I am a rock who has lived for a very long time. I have had many adventures and experiences in my past. This is the story of how I became who I am today.

Mantle
I started out as magma, which is molten rock, therefore not a solid nor a liquid. I was found in the mantle, the thickest layer of the earth. As the tectonic plates shifted above me, I rose higher up, closer to the crust.
Eventually, the pressure from the plate movement caused me to spew out of a volcano, in the form of lava. While I was still hot, I remained lava, but once I cooled down, I turned into a rock. They called me an extrusive igneous rock, since I was formed outside of the volcano.
Heat and pressure turned me into a metamorphic rock over time, by melting and reforming my material.
Over the years, I slowly started to erode and weather. Wind and water broke me into fragments and carried the minuscule pieces to a new place.
As I eroded, more sediments attached to me, and I got compressed into a sedimentary rock. I also collected some cool plant remains along the way, which turned into a cast fossil embedded into me.
Now, I live in the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller (Alberta, Canada). I help teach humans about fossilization and the rock cycle. I have had many adventures during my lifetime, but I am happy to have a home safe from the wind, water and heat.
