- "she was doing what Sam was doing"
- This quote, being said after an intimate moment with Charlie and Sam, subtly tells the reader that his great aunt, who he had been thinking about all story, touched him inappropriately as a child. It shows how he was very closed off, didn't even reveal this to his family, and very barely did to the reader. It shows how the trauma blocked him from others entirely
- What is being shown here is the Homecoming dance scene seen at the beginning of the story. Charlie can be seen sitting alone with nobody to talk to, seeming very much unassuming, and closed off. It represents Charlies struggle throughout the story to find friends and create relationships. also showing how many of those around him do not understand him for who he is.
- This quote, taken from the end of the book during a car ride replicating the first one through the cave, shows how Charlie has overcome his struggles, and learned how to face life. he has made friends and made connections he never would have though he had. His friends and family have helped him through so much, and he no longer feels like everything is so bad.
- "I thought about Patrick calling me his friend. And Ithought about Sam telling me to do things. To really be there. And I just thought how great it wasto have friends and a family."
