- We have no food and we live in poverty in China, you must go soon for Gold Mountain in America!
- Many Chinese left their poverty stricken homeland for a more promising life in the gold rich land of California in America. It was known to the Chinese as the "Gold Mountain".
- America! Where people are free. Tell me what it's like when you come back.
- The Chinese aren't the only ones paying your taxes. Give all foreigners rights!
- The gold rich lands of California are for Americans, the white man! Not you!
- I will not give up on America, nor on this dream.
- In accordance with the will of the Congress, the law that all foreign miners shall pay a monthly tax is put in place. This tax is to ensure that foreigners pay respect to the land the United States grants them to do their work on.Millard Fillmore
- The foreigners, they should have to pay to mine on American land!
- As gold became increasingly more difficult to find, Chinese immigrants were blamed and discriminated against. The Government went as far as to pass taxes and laws forcing foreign miners to pay a fee for the right to mine.
- I haven't found a single scrap of gold in weeks! It's these filthy Chinese!
- They hate us, we only wanted a fair chance.
- The Chinese have no rights! We are being punished for no reason!
- It's your fault!
- The Chinese were so hated that other people often burned their homes and beat them. They also brutally disrespected their culture.
- What have I done! I only mine like the rest of you! I am only Chinese!
- The land is beautiful! Our irrigation systems are working well and we have good farming land. Our restaurants are doing great!
- The Chinese, even through prejudice and discrimination, started restaurants and irrigated crops, additionally, the helped build railroads. Their image and culture remains a strong influence in California today.
- California! A land of freedom, we are happy here. I think from now on that the Chinese will be respected for who we are!
