  • Just mercy takes place in Monroeville, Alabama during the 1980s. Walter McMillian is a black man that was caught up in an affair with a white woman named Karen Kelly, which ruined his reputation. When The book starts when a black man Walter McMillan is arrested by openly racist Sheriff Tate
  • Climax
  • Walter McMillan is arrested and put on death row for a crime that he didn't commit. Ralph Myers falsely claimed he had given Walter a ride to the dry cleaners where he killed Ronda Morrison. Other white men gave false accusations to help solidify the case against Walter.
  • Falling Action
  • Walter contacts Bryan Stevenson, a Legal Advocate that helped represent people on death row. Over a few years Bryan attempts to get a retrial and post-conviction relief for Walter despite the political discrimination and political corruption.
  • Resolution
  • The new district attorney is suspicious of the States integrity and finds that Walter is innocent. Using this and Ralph Myers admitting to lying about the accusations Bryan Stevenson is able to prove Walter's innocence.
  • Walter is finally freed from the horrible jail he was kept in and is free to go back to his old life. He goes back to cutting timber and visits his family and friends before he finally returns to his home.
  • After 6 years Walter was freed from death row, however, he was never the same. He witnessed over 8 deaths during his time in jail and trauma from things such as these caused him to develop dementia and anxiety
