  • All new settlers come this way!

  • We believe in Manifest Destiny!
  • Mountain men were fur traders, they often spent their time with the Indians during the harsh winters. By 1830 trades were dying, they had killed too many animals for fur. They started using their skills for other things like leading new settlers into Oregon.
  • Mexican-American War
  • Families woke at dawn and everyone had their own job. Girls helped their mothers prepare food, men and boys would manage the horses and oxen. They had lunch at noon then kept traveling. There were many threats on the trail, a major threat was diseases that could wipe out a whole wagon train. Settlers moving west also traded with Native Americans. By the 1840's Americans outnumbered the British and soon came to an agreement that both nations would occupy Oregon.
  • Mormons in Utah
  • Manifest means clear or obvious. Destiny means something that is sure. Americans believed that the Manifest Destiny would give opportunities for the states economy. It also played a part in the election of 1844.
  • California Gold Rush

  • The war started by a border dispute. Both nations of America and Mexico claimed they owned land between the Rio Grand and Nueces River. During the war, Americans attacked all at once. President Polk hoped this strategy would work, and it did. Mexico city was now owned by the U.S. and gave up California, thus expanding west even more.

  • The Mormons were the largest group of settlers to move into Mexican Cession. They belonged to the church of Jesus Christ, Latter day Saints. It's founder was Joseph Smith in 1830. They clashed with their neighbors often. Brigham Young had to move 15,000 men, women, and children from Illinois to Utah. He reached this goal in 1847, Congress recognized Young as a governor and by 1896, Utah became part of the United States.

  • Thousands of Americans rushed to California, the attraction, gold. The gold rush changed California, San Francisco grew from a small boring town to a busy city. Because of murders and robberies sky rocketing, California knew they needed a strong government. In 1850 California was admitted into the Union.
