  • Sir Gawain is protecting king Aruthur by playing the Green Knights challange for him.
  • Gawain says, "I am weakest of your warriors and feeblest of wit; loss of my life would be least lamented. Such a foolish affair is unfitting for a king, so, being first to come forward, it should fall on me." (SG and the GK, pg. 43 (354-359)).
  • The narrator writes, "He rides the path and prays, dismayed by his misdeeds, and signs Christ's cross and says, "Be near me in my need." No sooner had he signed himself three times that he became aware, in the woods ... The most commanding castle a kight ever kept." (SG and the GK, pg. 71 (759-767)).
  • Gawains prayers were answered. He prayed for shelter.
  • Narrator says "He stands to strike, a sneer comes over lip and brow. Gawain is gripped by fear, no hope of resuce now. Hoisted and aimed, the axe hurtled downawards, the blade bearing gown on the knights bare neck, ... it skewed to one side, just skimming the skin." (SG and the GK, pg. 175 (2305-2312)).
  • Gawain reciving his final due and his punishment from the Green Knight.
