  • The Constitution created a national government, basic laws, and fundamental citizen rights. The United States Constitution was drafted by James Madison. The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, during the Constitutional Convention in Virginia. On June 21, 1788, it was approved.
  • There are seven articles and twenty-seven amendments in the constitution. The Preamble defines the document's objective as well as the government.
  • The Federalist Papers were released on October 27th, 1787. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay wrote the Federalist Papers, a collection of writings. The writings called for a stronger central government and played a role in the Constitution's approval.
  • Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution on December 7, 1787. Delaware was formally constituted as the first state under this new American government with the first adoption of the Constitution.
  • New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the Constitution on June 21, 1788. The new government of the United States became the "law of the land" once nine of the thirteen states ratified the Constitution, as agreed upon by the Constitutional Convention.
  • George Washington was unanimously chosen as the first President of the United States of America on April 30, 1789. Under the rules of the United States Constitution, President Washington and Vice President John Adams were the first leaders of this new nation.
