- Interphase
- Interphase is the first and also the longest stage of the cell cycle. The cell expands and prepares for mitosis during interphase.
- Telophase
- Prophase is the initial stage of mitosis and the second stage of the cell cycle. The centrioles separate at this point, chromatin condenses into chromosomes, a spindle develops, and the nuclear membrane disintegrates.
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- The chromosomes align up across the middle of the cell during metaphase. At its centromere, each chromosome is connected to a spindle fiber.
- Cytokinesis

- The sister chromatids split into distinct chromosomes and are shifted apart during anaphase.
- Anaphase
- The chromosomes cluster at opposing ends of the cell during telophase and lose their distinct shape, resulting in the formation of two nuclear envelopes.
