- The Visigoths emerged from the Gothic tribes . They were Germanic people and it is believed they had their origins in Scandinavia and then migrated southwestward into eastern Europe.
- Scout for land
- The Visigoths (western tribes of Goths), separated from the Ostrogoths(eastern tribes of Goths ) in the 4th century AD.
- Alaric and Rome
- Alaric I was the first king of the Visigoths, from 395 to 410.
- The Aftermath
- All he really wanted was land on which his people could settle and an accepted place within the empire, which the authorities in Ravenna (a city in Italy) would not give him. Wanting and needing to keep his followers well rewarded he began plotting.
- He marched on Rome and besieged it until the Roman senate paid him to go away. In 409 he attacked Rome again and was able to set up a temporary emperor(Priscus Atallus) who did not last long. In 410, with the authorities in Ravenna still refusing his demands, Alaric led his warriors against Rome once more.
- Rome collapsed.They destroyed many of the great buildings and killed people as they went . The flow of trade was disrupted .The whole Roman population and what they had achieved and worked for were let down and and betrayed .
