  • Causes of the war
  • The war of 1812
  • Trouble with Native Americans
  • Land Battles
  • The war of 1812 was caused by many incidents, events, and things. Those being impressment (the taking of sailors and forcing them to serve the British; the oppressors), the British arming the indians fighting the U.S., and the British generally being a nuisance (blockading ports, attacking U.S. ships, etc). All in all, these reasons and many more is what caused the U.S. to declare war on Great Britain, thus starting the War of 1812.
  • Sea Battles
  • Due to the Louisiana purchase, which opened up the west, settlers started to move more west and settle there. But native Americans were already there. Consequently, the two groups started fighting (the U.S. & indians). After many victories, the U.S. found out that the indians were using modern British weapons, meaning the British had been supplying the indians and possible inciting violence.
  • The battle of New Orleans
  • After the declaration of war made by congress, the U.S. forces started to march on Canada and the British there. There they had many victories and losses, such as capturing a British fleet and pushing into upper Canada. In the end, they were pushed out of Canada as a whole. Due to America's advances, the British moved onto American soil. They attacked multiple cities, such as the Capital. There, they burned down many buildings like the white house.
  • Results of the war
  • The war of 1812 was comprised of Sea & Land battles. The U.S. was at a severe disadvantage in both, but especially sea battles. The U.S. had now where near the number of ships the British had. They only had 16 warships! Compared to England's 500, the Americans stood no chance. They had some victories, captured some British ships, but was driven out of Canada. British ships then bombarded U.S. cities.
  • The battle of New Orleans would signal the end of the war. General Andrew Jackson had 7000 troops with him. The British had 7500. The British marched into battle, and the Americans fought. In the end, around 2000 British soldiers were killed, compared to only 70 Americans. Its clear who won. The Americans claimed victory. It was the greatest victory in the war of 1812. Although, all this was unnecessary as diplomats from both sides had signed a peace treaty 2 weeks prior.
  • After the war of 1812, both sides (obviously) claimed victory. But there was no clear victor, as the treaty between the fighting sides had not addressed that. It was just declaring peace. Over time, the issues that had caused the war had mostly faded away due to peace in Europe. Results of the war: All the indians fighting prior to the war of 1812 had been largely driven out of the area. Secondly, american pride skyrocketed. They felt that as standing up to England, they had truly become a sovereign nation. Lastly, due to Federalists opposing the war, the party had been majorly damaged and never recovered. William Henry & Andrew jackson, 1812 war heroes, would later become president.
